Say ‘Hello’ Andy

World this is Andy – Andy this is the world…..say hello….

hello

You’ve actually met before when this happened. It’s okay if you don’t remember, I think we all can understand.

A while back, the kids wanted a guinea pig and they were working hard to save their money and figure out everything that we would need to care for one. As a surprise for them and as a bit of a reward for keeping up with their chores and doing well in their school work and helping maintain my level of insanity at the low end, I decided to surprise them and get one. I found Andy on Craig’s List for FREE and when we saw her, we just couldn’t resist. Can you blame us? She’s adorable don’t you think?

But, I need a bit of help. Andy has been living happily in her cage and enjoying some outside time, still under her cage top, every few days when we clean out her cage. The family we got her from had a small back yard and the woman said that she allowed Andy to stay outside most of the day during good weather and brought her in at night. That sounded like a nice idea but not a very practical one -at least not at this house. You see, in our yard, we also have these two pups. Achilles and Penelope, say hello…

These are the very same pups that terrorized poor little Andy not that long ago. But these pups are on their way to live in Michigan at the end of the month with my brother. A couple of years ago, my brother had to go overseas for work and asked if I would temporarily care or these cuties while he was away. Long story short, it’s been a few years and he has moved a few times in between but now he has a new home with a BIG yard in MI perfect for the pups. All this means is that the back yard will be dog free and I need to know how good of an idea it would be to let Andy roam around the yard every once in a while. I am wary of just letting her roam wihtout an enclosure – there are lots of places to get lost.

Is outside time important for guinea pigs? If not outside time, should we get her a wheel to play on? Clearly, I don’t know as much as I should about this cutie but what I do know is that keeping her in her cage most of the time does not seem right. I have read some books but really have not been able to find much information on the subject and sadly, the staff at the pet store has not been much help either. So here I am asking for your advice.

It will be greatly appreciated.
