my ’sunday drive’
Kim @ Up North Mommy has started taking Sunday Drives each week as a way to help remind herself to slow down and enjoy the world around us. This week, I decided to play along.
Kim lives in some pretty beautiful wide open spaces - go take at look at the pictures she posted from her drive this week. I did and they made me sigh and day dream of a time when I might be able to enjoy beauty like that everyday. For now, I live in a big city and so sometimes taking a drive even on a Sunday is not always relaxing.
Perhaps it is because they have been on summer vacation too long, perhaps it was just the heat or maybe they were just overly tired from their weekend with their dad….These kids drove me to my breaking point what with all their whining, “Why to we have to go?”s and “How long are we going to be there?”s, and “Can’t we just stay home?”s. Ugh - now I was cranky too
Let me just say too that my kids are well beyond the age for this kind of behavior.
I dragged them off kicking and screaming told them they were going and that was that and off we went. We made a quick stop at a Quiznos to pick up sandwiches for a ‘picnic’ dinner and then arrived at my favorite bookstore. I know a bookstore does not quite qualify as outdoor beauty but maybe this (even if it its stretching the concept a bit - okay a whole lot) can qualify?

We took the kids to a free outdoor jazz concert! It was shady and cool and an evening breeze was coming through - a nice relief from the heat we’ve had the last couple of days. It was fun and while the kids did start out sour pusses, in the end, they came around and had a good time. I giggled to see their toes tapping and my oldest sun playing and air guitar. We all did and it was a really nice way to spend a couple of hours together as a family.
Thank you Kim for the great idea and for letting me play along ![]()

An outdoor jazz concert. How cool is that. I’m so glad your kids eventually had a good time. Those kinds of activities are important, I think. I grew up with my parents taking us to Music Under the Stars on Sunday nights at the Toledo Zoo. Although we complained, it was great for us as kids to hear the Toledo Symphony perform.
